Pat Bonner tells ‘superb’ Celtic player he was ‘unlucky’ not to start vs Hibs in the Scottish Cup

Celtic cruised into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup at Parkheah yesterday afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers watched his Celtic team comfortably beat Hibs 2-0 as goals from Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah set up a Hampden date with either Hearts, Aberdeen, Livingston or St Johnstone.

Celtic’s starting XI delighted the fans as Rodgers went all in attacking to ensure his unblemished Scottish Cup record remained intact.

However, former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner believes that there is one player who could have felt hard done by after being left on the bench for the big game against Hibs.

Pat Bonner explains why Hyunjung Yang could feel ‘unlucky’ not to start for Celtic vs Hibs

Hyunjun Yang was electric in Celtic’s win at St Mirren and Bonner believes that that performance alone should have left him in with a shout to start against Hibs.

Bonner told BBC Radio Scotland, “They know they’re up against a team that’s high in confidence Celtic, so they’ll be wanting to continue what they did against St Mirren.

“Yang is probably the one that might be feeling a little bit unlucky not to be in the [starting] team. I think Kuhn has gone off slightly.

“He’s still a very, very good player, a player who can score goals and all that. Whether he’s [Rodgers] thinking Yang is more of an impact player coming off the bench, and he was superb against St. Mirren, and I thought he was the difference, just not his goals, but his energy, and he just lifted them up to a different level.

“So he might feel unlucky, but the rest of them, probably, that’s what I would go with too.”

Hyunjun Yang’s goal-per-minutes for Celtic vs Nicolas Kuhn

Yang has certainly shown to be an effective impact player from the Celtic bench recently and has chipped in with a fair amount of goal, but how does his scoring ratio compare with Nicolas Kuhn’s?

Celtic goalsPlayedGoalsMinutes playedGoals per minute
Hyunjun Yang58623191 goal every 386 minutes
Nicolas Kuhn592137721 goal every 179 minutes

In roughly just the same number of appearances for Celtic, Kuhn is outscoring Yang by a ratio of almost double what the South Korean winger can muster.

Until those figures improve, Yang will continue to be an impact player from the Celtic bench for the foreseeable future.
