Peter Grant and Billy Dodds agree Celtic star ‘playing out of position’ has been the ‘best player’

It has been a rather interesting start to the new season for Celtic.

Even though Brendan Rodgers’ side have been nowhere near their free-flowing best, only two points have been dropped on the domestic scene, and a potential trip to Hampden in the Scottish League Cup semi-final awaits.

Celtic crashing out of the Champions League doesn’t help matters, but that’s a key reason why supporters are protesting against the board, including against the abject 2025 summer transfer window.

Yes, Celtic fans are right to express their disappointment, frustration and anger, but Peter Grant and Billy Dodds agreed that one special gem has emerged from the recent darkness of the summer.

Benjamin Nygren has been Celtic’s best player

Celtic signed Benjamin Nygren pretty early on in the window, perhaps a sign that if they had done this with most of the signings, then things would have been different.

But Grant thinks, amid the outside noise, Nygren has been Celtic’s ‘best player’, before Dodds chirped in and added, that’s including the winger ‘playing out of position.’

Speaking on Go Radio, the duo wanted to give Celtic’s £1.8 million signing from FC Nordsjælland his flowers for how he has started life in Glasgow.

Grant: “Well, Nygren has probably been our best player this season. He has scored goals. He’s had the most assists. Most shots on target.”

Dodds: “And that’s being played out of position as well.”

Grant: ‘Exactly, Doddsy. That’s what surprised me against Rangers when he (Rodgers) played him wide right. I thought he has still got to play inside, because of all the things we are talking about.

“That then goes to tactics on the football field. That’s nothing to do with what’s happening off the field. That surprised me tactically, because I thought, ‘he is a threat’, and even when he moved there late in the game, I thought that was Celtic’s best period.”

Dodds: “Absolutely.”

Grant: “But he cost what, £1.8 million? They (Celtic fans protesting) aren’t talking about going and spending £15-20 million on a player all the time.”

Nygren’s stats for Celtic this season

Nygren is keeping Arne Engels out of Celtic’s XI, and that’s rather interesting because he is the club’s record transfer.

Yes, it’s still early days, but so far, the signs are positive from Nygren, who has four goal involvements to his name so far.
