Peter Grant has one question for Brendan Rodgers over Celtic’s summer business

Celtic’s summer transfer window has come under plenty of scrutiny.

Brendan Rodgers saw Kyogo Furuhashi leave without a replacement in January, before also losing Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah in the last few months.

Despite the early arrivals of Kieran Tierney and Benjamin Nygren, far too much of the Hoops’ business was done late in the window.

This contributed to Celtic’s disastrous defeat against Kairat Almaty, which cost them a place in the Champions League.

This has understandably led to anger among fans – and for one Hoops hero, there is one main question for the window.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Sebastian Tounekti and Kelechi Iheanacho were all signed in the last week of the window, giving the Hoops’ attack some much-needed reinforcements.

But there were some signings which haven’t exactly reinforced Rodgers’ squad, and that’s where Peter Grant has his questions.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Grant named three signings that he was struggling to understand.

He said: “The only question I would have with that one is: they’ve sanctioned them: Pusey, Shin and the full-back [Inamura].

“So if you’ve sanctioned them and they’re not in your [Europa] League squad, I find that quite incredible. Because you’re not talking about kids.

“Forget about the boy Osmand that came from Fulham, because I always thought he was going to be a B team player if he was lucky – and I don’t mean that disrespectfully, I always thought he was going to be a younger one who was maybe going to go out on loan somewhere.

“But those three were coming up to have an impact on the first team. But not to be in the squad? And it’s the manager, you’re saying ‘why would you sign three players if they’re not going to be in your European squad?

“Especially then because we knew that we were needing players who were ready to impact the team and not just become part of the squad – but they’re not even part of the squad, and I’d be surprised if Brendan sanctioned that.”

Shin Yamada, Hayato Inamura and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey’s situations at Celtic

The three European no-shows for Celtic may have that in common, but they are all in very different situations as players.

Inamura was signed having barely kicked a ball in his career at senior level. Despite his age of 23, he had started just 20 J-League games for Albirex Niigata,

Yamada also came from the J-League, but with more experience under his belt. Despite this, there is still doubt over his ability to establish himself at Celtic given that he had largely been a substitute for Kawasaki Frontale.

For Simpson-Pusey, it’s been a mystery. As a loan signing, you’d expect him to be ready to make an impact – but he has not played a senior minute, and played for the B team against East Fife on Friday night.
