Peter Grant lauds ‘tremendous’ Celtic player who’s proven ‘the jersey is not too big for him’

Brendan Rodgers went on a spending spree this summer and brought no less than eight players to Celtic.

The Hoops boss splashed the cash and broke Celtic’s transfer record twice by signing Adam Idah from Norwich City for £9.5m and Arne Engels from Augsburg for £11.5m.

However, whilst both players are doing relatively well and settling into Celtic, it’s another summer addition who has Peter Grant waxing lyrical right now.

Luke McCowan is proving he can handle playing for Celtic

Signed by Celtic for £1m on transfer deadline day, Luke McCowan has been excellent in the six appearances he has made in the green and white Hoops.

McCowan made his Celtic debut in the 3-0 win over Rangers and almost immediately impressed the fans.

But Grant said he always knew McCowan was a quality player and proves how he’s not ‘jumping on the bandwagon’ in his praise of Celtic’s new hero.

Grant told The Go Radio Football Show [2m 43], “Listen, he’s done tremendous since he came in. I mean, we spoke about him last year when he was at Dundee. So we’re not just jumping on the bandwagon.

“We were full of praise for him, the way his performances were at Dundee never mind at Celtic, and he’s continued that. And the one thing is the jersey is not too big for him.

“And that’s important for him. Because sometimes you go there as a supporter, I’m similar to that when I went back as a coach, sometimes you want to prove to everybody you’re this or that.

“And he has done it tremendously well in his performances, he’s deserved the credit he gets. And it’ll be interesting to see when this international squad gets picked next, how well he’s done.

“Because I think it’s an area of the pitch that, especially when you’ve not got a Callum McGregor in that group now, that he could be added to it.”

Four games Luke McCowan could potentially start for Celtic

After getting his first start in Celtic’s win over Motherwell, McCowan has put himself in contention to become a regular for Brendan Rodgers.

With Dundee up next, McCowan is likely to be given the nod due to the injury to Celtic captain, Callum McGregor.

Aberdeen is up next in the League Cup semi-final and depending on how McGregor progresses or if Arne Engels up his game, the former Dundee man could well be in the frame for that fixture as well.

RB Leipzig comes calling as Champions League duty resumes at Celtic Park and putting McCowan into that huge game would almost certainly not phase the Hoops support.

And the final game before the next international break, Kilmarnock comes to Glasgow to face Celtic and McCowan could feature if he continues to impress the Celtic boss from now until then.
