Peter Grant slams critics of Celtic star who ‘gives everything’ for Brendan Rodgers

Celtic won a league and cup double last season and came within a whisker of another treble.

Brendan Rodgers also guided Celtic out of the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2013 as the Hoops boss enjoyed a successful second season at the club.

There were, however, some players who were criticised for their performances last season and, in some cases, that criticism was justified.

But Peter Grant reckons one Celtic star was critiqued far too harshly and the former Hoops midfielder said that it happened more than he deserved.

Peter Grant fires back at Liam Scales’ Celtic critics

Liam Scales was a player Brendan Rodgers relied heavily on in his first season back at Celtic and the Irish defender never really let him down.

So when Grant heard the criticism the central defender was getting last season, he wasn’t having any of it.

Grant told The Go Radio Football Show, “I think Scales gets a little bit more criticism than he deserves. I think every time I see him, he gives everything to the maximum.

“I’d like to see him passing forward and trusting himself a little bit more instead of going square all the time at certain aspects.

“He’s got to trust himself and I think Kieran Tierney will help him with that. So I’m comfortable with him.”

The Celtic milestone Liam Scales will hit next season

Scales was on the brink of a Celtic exit no less than two seasons ago until an injury crisis gave him his big Parkhead break.

In the summer of 2023, Scales partnered Gustaf Lagerbielke in a 0-0 draw at St Johnstone and that sparked a 29-game starting run in Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic first-team.

Fast forward two seasons later and Scales is on the brink of his 100th appearance for the club.

Currently on 97, the big Irish defender could reach the magic century in Celtic’s Champions League play-off fixture in August.

What a remarkable story for a defender who was so far out of the picture at Celtic, he almost had the red shirt of Aberdeen on his shoulders permanently.
