The Schmeichel name has a rich history in football and now it is associated with the might of Celtic.
Peter Schmeichel started it all off from being a European Championship winner in the colours of Denmark to securing legendary status in England’s top-flight.
It’s not easy following in your father’s footsteps, especially when he has had such a trophy-winning career, but Kasper Schmeichel has done that and now he is looking to end on a high with Celtic.
On Wednesday night, as Celtic were outclassing Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, Manchester City and Inter were recording a 0-0 draw at the Etihad for their opening match.
Working for the American network CBS, Peter Schmeichel was covering the game live from the Etihad, whilst host Kate Abdo, legendary striker Thierry Henry, 2005 Champions League winner Jamie Carragher and two-time Premier League winner, Micah Richards added analysis on all the games from the TV studios in London.
But despite being at such a big game, Kasper’s dad admitted ‘I wish I was there tonight’ at Parkhead watching his son in action on their opening European night.
The former Manchester United keeper travels around Europe covering games for CBS from Munich to Paris, but he pleaded with the producers to send him to Dortmund for his next gig.
Celtic take on Borussia Dortmund in a blockbuster Champions League clash at Signal Iduna Park for matchday two on October 1.
Before the game, he pleaded with the producer to send him to Dortmund, so he could watch Celtic and his son in action, with those in the studio then pushing for it to happen also.
Jamie Carragher also asked the Treble-winner at Manchester United if he would stand in Dortmund’s famous yellow wall.
But Schmeichel senior made it clear that he is going to be with the Celtic fans in the ‘green wall’ and the two clubs are probably ‘the two best-supported teams in the Champions League’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (18/09/24 at 7:45 pm).
Borussia Dortmund v Celtic in the Champions League
“I wish I was there (at Celtic) tonight,” said Peter Schmeichel, whilst standing at the Etihad before kick-off. “Hopefully, I will get another opportunity to watch him play in the Champions League – they have had a flying start to the season. Five games in the league. Five wins. No goals conceded. This is something he has wanted to do for a very long time.
“I am not there tonight, but the next game is in Dortmund. Peter Radovich (CBS producer), if you are listening, which I kind of know that you are. I really want to go to that game. That will be, I am not sure people will be aware of this, but that would probably be the two best-supported teams in this Champions League. Celtic supporters are unbelievable. Dortmund are unbelievably supported. That will just be a great footballing experience. Of course, I want to watch my son play that game.”
Kate Abdo then pleaded: “Go on. We owe it to Peter! Come on Pete (Radovich). We owe it to him. If we (Abdo, Thierry Henry, Carragher and Micah Richards all raise their hands). We are all voting for him.”
Carragher then asks: “Are you going in the yellow wall or with the Celtic crew?” To which Schmeichel responded: “No, I will go in the green wall.”
Then post-match, after Celtic won, Kasper’s dad got his wish: “Next time, it’s Dortmund and I am going to be there. Thank you very much, Mr Radovich, to be, not in the yellow wall, but in the green wall. It is going to be some experience. It’s a massive, massive test for Celtic. It’s the strongest opponent they will have for a very long time. If they can do want Inter did (against Man City) and get a 0-0 draw, then it’s a great result.”

Kasper Schmeichel starts with a bang at Celtic
The 37-year-old has a Premier League medal to his name, but he has only played one full season in Europe’s elite competition.
But, now that he is in Celtic colours, this is going to be the norm for him in years to come.

Joe Hart’s retirement was massive for Celtic and a big void was left in the summer, but you have to say, it’s been filled perfectly.
From Kasper’s character to his experience, this just feels right and you know it will work in the time he will be at the club.
Celtic are already flying, as he must be thinking all of this is easy because nobody has laid a glove on the team this season, even if you go back to pre-season.
