Postecoglou bats away George Baldock to Celtic question; lays out 3 'plan A' signing approach

Ange Postecoglou says Celtic are pursuing a number of targets concurrently to finally fill the right-back position at the club.

Currently, the Bhoys are relying on Anthony Ralston, a player who failed to cement himself as first-choice in the position in seasons prior.

It’s a matter of urgency to bring a defender in. So far though, nothing has been delivered.

A number of players have been linked including Sheffield United’s George Baldock and Rennes’ Brandon Soppy.

The manager was asked specifically about Baldock today but refused to be drawn on a specific target. Instead, he explained the philosophy behind attempts to bring in players.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Postecoglou responded: “I’ve avoided talking about specific targets. We’ve had to have multiple targets in every position. It’s challenging right now to get deals done, whether because of Covid restrictions or it’s still fairly early in the window.

“If I was to say we were after a certain player and we didn’t get him, I’d hate to think that people thought we went to plan B. That’s not the case. We’ve got three plan As running concurrently in the positions we need players. For me, it’s about getting one of those identified and into the squad and training as quickly as possible.

“You’re right, right-back is an area we don’t have a lot of depth at the moment, so that’s a key area. But there are other positions we’re still looking for players.”

Celtic have arguably needed a new right-back for over two years ever since Mikael Lustig left the club.

Since then we’ve failed to find a permanent solution. Players such as Moritz Bauer and Jonjoe Kenny have come and gone, while the influence of Jeremie Frimpong was short and sweet.

It seems there is real intent to deliver on this area of the team this summer.

Fingers crossed it all comes off sooner rather than later.
