Pundit delivers harsh reality for Celtic winger Mikey Johnston after showing ‘real promise’

Mikey Johnston can’t argue that he isn’t getting the opportunities to prove himself at Celtic.

In recent weeks, Brendan Rodgers has handed the Celtic winger start after start, including in the Champions League, but he just isn’t answering the call.

Stephen McGinn thinks Mikey Johnston is somehow ‘getting worse’ with the more chances he is handed, as he told Go Radio.

That’s not good to hear for a 24-year-old, who has showcased so much promise as a youngster and now isn’t delivering.

There is every chance that Mikey Johnston is on his last legs at Celtic and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he leaves in January.

There are probably others, such as Alexandro Bernabei and summer signing Gustaf Lagerbielke who are ahead of him, in that aspect.

But this isn’t a good look for the Republic of Ireland star, who was hooked off at half-time during the defeat to Hearts.

Mikey Johnston to leave Celtic?

“Mikey Johnston, yes I know you remember as a really promising player,” said McGinn. “But it just didn’t happen for him. His time is up at Celtic.

“I think he has played four games in a row, Mikey Johnston. He seems to be getting worse. I don’t know if it’s confidence. It was time for Mikey Johnston in the summer to move on.”

Celtic team selection against Livingston

It’s going to be interesting to see what Rodgers does here. Who can he actually bring in because there have been so many underperformers?

Those who started at the weekend, such as Johnston, should find themselves out of the XI because the team needs to find some rhythm and form ahead of the visit of Rangers.

There is now a title race on, something some Celtic fans thought might not be happening a few months ago.

Hopefully, the worst of the season is behind the Bhoys, but come 2 pm on Saturday, a lot of eyes will be on what type of changes Rodgers will make because if there aren’t more than three, then it will be surprising.
