Chris Sutton has launched a passionate defence of former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou after his Europa League success.

The former Celtic manager ended Tottenham Hotspur’s 17-year wait for a trophy as they beat Manchester United in the Europa League.

Celtic sent Postecoglou a classy message after his triumph after he stuck to his promise that he always wins trophies in his second season.

Postecoglou was extremely successful during his time at Parkhead but his stint south of the border has been met with waves of criticism.

Sutton has always been a passionate defender of Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers, but took his latest argument to the next level.

Sutton says Postecoglou is ‘absolutely entitled to give it the big up yours’

Writing in his Daily Record column, the former Celtic striker admitted that the reaction from the English media towards the Australian gave him every right to soak up the plaudits.

“He was absolutely entitled to give it the big up yours to everyone afterwards given some of the shameful abuse he’s taken this season,” Sutton admitted.

“Postecoglou hasn’t just been criticised – he’s been ridiculed. So much of it was way over the line, like the nonsense in the last week about him potentially ending up a clown.

“The flak he’s taken is down to nothing but English snobbery. Listen, I’m as English as they come, but even I can see arrogant and dismissive some people can be down here.

“No one should underestimate the job he did at Celtic. The club was in a bit of a mess when he arrived, Rangers having won the league by a mile.

“But winning the title back in his first year and then completing the Treble was a superb achievement.”

Sutton says Brendan Rodgers is experiencing similar treatment to Postecoglou

Postecoglou has had his fair share of criticism, as has Rodgers this season.

The Celtic manager is one game away from another famous Treble-winning season and Sutton believes that a clean sweep of domestic trophies shouldn’t be met with a shrug of the shoulders in England.

He added: “Just because he’s made it look easy doesn’t mean it is. In fact, it’s bloody hard to win Trebles.

“Rodgers has proved he’s a top manager on both sides of the border but he has also suffered similar stick to Postecoglou over the years.

“That summed up for me why the Celtic job isn’t one of the easiest jobs in football – it’s one of the toughest.”
