Ange Postecoglou was happy to hear his team set an 85-year high when it comes to Celtic league goalscoring, after a 5-0 rout of Aberdeen on Saturday.
The Celtic Park result brought this group’s league goal tally for the season up to a massive 114, the highest total seen from the club since the 1937/38 season.
It’s the Celtic record in post-war football, surpassing the amount notched up by Jock Stein’s legendary Lisbon Lions in 1966/67. They netted far more in all competitions but amassed a 111-league-goal total.

Some may not put much credence into statistics like these ones but for Ange himself, it was a proud moment, because he wants goalscoring to be the hallmark of his team.
He said after the game [Sunday Post, 28/05 print edition: “I am really proud of that. It’s kind of what my football is about. I love my teams to play. I have said before, I set my teams up to win and entertain the fans.
“The players have done that this year. They have been relentless. Just the sheer volume of goals and, even on a day like this, not relaxing when it’s 3-0 or even 4-0. They want to make every moment count.”
At one point this year, Celtic were on course to break the club’s all-time league goalscoring record set all the way back in 1915/16, but with the team naturally taking their foot off the gas after winning the title, that well by the wayside.
Other records such as points and wins also didn’t quite materialise. But that really takes nothing away from the incredible consistency we’ve witnessed for most of the season.
A treble next week is what really counts and the signs are strong we’ll get the job done against Billy Dodds’ Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
In other news, Kenny Dalglish expecting “remarkable achievement” from Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic.
