Celtic are considering Belgian coach Rik de Mil this week as the club continue to keep an open mind on who could replace Ange Postecoglou.
A wide field of names, from different leagues and backgrounds, have already been reported in connection to the Celtic role as the board widen the search for the best possible candidate to take on the challenge in Glasgow.
De Mil is someone clearly flying under the radar when it comes to most supporters, but journalist Mark Hendry of Football Scotland reports this weekend he has joined the club’s ‘longlist’ of potential appointees.
The 41-year-old has been a coach at Club Brugge, working with the youth and senior sides, for eight years and was given interim boss status when Scott Parker left.
Now that former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has been given the gig, De Mil could be looking for a new challenge.
It’s said he has a lot of admirers on the European coaching scene and is tipped for a big future in the game – although taking a leap to the Celtic job would be a surprising first management role.
Celtic may well just be keeping tabs on who the most rated and upcoming coaches across the continent are. Like when Enzo Maresca was interviewed for the job in 2021, it’s useful to build relationships even if not for the here and now.
It feels unlikely the Bhoys will opt for De Mil, but it’s a name worth keeping an eye on in any case. Hopefully, as the week progresses we get a firmer view of who the club’s preferred candidate is.
