Celtic could make a move for Shanghai-based midfielder Aaron Mooy, according to Australian outlet The World Game.
The report states that there’s been talk in Shanghai of Celtic making an approach for the former Brighton and Huddersfield Town man. Mooy currently plays his football with Shanghai Port after moving to China last summer.
Celtic fans may know him for his spells down south where he racked up 96 English Premier League appearances. However, Mooy also spent time with St Mirren back in the 2010/11 campaign. Since then, he’s become a 42-time capped internationalist with Australia and a respected box-to-box midfielder [Transfermarkt].
The World Game believes that Shanghai Port would be unlikely to play hardball with their star man. But given the wages he’s on in China, it’s stated that this could be an issue for Celtic.
The Hoops aren’t necessarily in desperate need of a central-midfield addition. However, with the loss of Scott Brown over the summer, Mooy could plug that experience gap which exists in our engine room.
Celtic move for Aaron Mooy would be very unlike the club’s transfer policy
As things stand, Celtic still have a general policy of buying low and selling high. The idea of bringing in young players and developing them for a big fee remains a focal point of our recruitment strategy. Or at least that’s what we’re still made to believe as fans.
It will be interesting to see whether that changes under Postecoglou. Mooy, for example, wouldn’t fit the profile of the kind of central midfielder we’re used to signing.
However, if this is who Postecoglou wants to bring to Parkhead then he needs to be backed. It could be the case that he wants a few trusted figures from Australia and Asia. If he does, we need to try and accommodate him as much as possible.

Granted, it would be disappointing if this was a potential deal that halted the progress of Ismaila Soro. For me, he should be considered as Brown’s successor and needs to be given that opportunity. He’s an investment for the football club and could be an extremely profitable one at that.
Even so, Mooy could be a no-risk signing if he was willing to take a big drop in wages. It could give him one more shot at the big time along with a chance to make a splash in Europe for the first time in his career.
We’ll see what happens as always, but signings need to be made as soon as possible.
