Report: Celtic prefer George Baldock to Sacha Boey in right-back transfer hunt

George Baldock has emerged as the preferred choice for Celtic when it comes to signing a first-team right-back this summer, The Daily Record reports.

The paper says he is top of Ange Postecoglou’s list for the position, above other potential targets such as young Rennes talent Sacha Boey.

However, Baldock won’t be cheap, as we know. It’s been reported by Yorkshire Live that Celtic are only willing to pay £5m for the defender. The Blades are thought to be holding out for much more.

From Celtic’s perspective, a massive transfer fee doesn’t make much sense. Baldock may have talent and experience but he’s 28. We’re not really in the business of sinking fees close to £10m on players at that stage of their careers. It’s just the way the club does business.

Right-back is the big priority position right now. Others will argue it’s between-the-sticks at goalkeeper but a new right-back will be fundamental to the way Postecoglou’s team are tactically set up.

No harm to Anthony Ralston, some of the criticism is definitely over the top, but he’s not the long-term solution in the position. Or, at least, hasn’t shown he can be to date. Bringing in an operator like Baldock would help massively.

But we know Celtic won’t be held to ransom and the financials of the deal will have to be spot on. To that end, it might well end up we get someone like Boey in the door, who has less playing experience and less standing when it comes to cash value.

Whoever it is, they need to arrive pretty quickly.

In other news, Tranmere Rovers are interested in signing young Celtic goalkeeper Ross Doohan.
