Reports this evening have suggested that a revised proposal could be put to Celtic surrounding a potential involvement in a European Super League.

According to John Cross’ latest article for the Mirror, both the Hoops and Glasgow rivals Rangers are being targeted as part of revised plans for a new European Super League.

Over a year ago, 12 of Europe’s biggest clubs, including sides from England, Italy and Spain, attempted to break away from UEFA and form their own midweek competition.

However, plans were ultimately scuppered after the incredible backlash from supporters across the globe led to the majority of clubs pulling out of the proposed tournament.

Although the subject has died down a little, well over 12 months on, there has still been a feeling that some of the world’s biggest clubs will come back to the idea one day.

The trio of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus, in particular, have remained keen to see the idea continue, with the three sides still locked in a court case, challenging ‘UEFA’s control and monopoly on European football after they blocked the ESL’.

According to a new report from the Mirror, the governing body are now ‘increasingly nervous’ about their current legal battle.

And there already appear to be new plans being put in place in order to try and entice new club sides into joining the European Super League.

The report states a new revised version could be proposed to Scottish Premiership giants, Celtic and Rangers due to the huge draw that both clubs would bring in any future breakaway.

This would ‘effectively freeze out’ any involvement for English Premier League clubs, who suffered arguably the biggest backlash from the breakaway idea.

However, that isn’t believed to have stopped those involved from attempting to attract the likes of Ange Postecoglou’s side or Ajax.

Celtic’s stance on the matter was already made clear in 2021, and the club should stand by that.

Although Celtic weren’t involved in the initial European Super League plans, the club did arguably still have a big involvement in the movement against the elite clubs breaking away.

The Bhoys CEO at the time, Peter Lawwell, was and still remains part of the European Club Association as a member of the board and participated in an emergency meeting during the ‘crisis’ as news of the proposal broke.

Sky Sports stated that Lawwell had the ability to ‘offer a Scottish take within the higher echelons of European football’ due to his position, and like many clubs, Celtic were understood to be strongly against the breakaway.

Now, of course, a lot has changed since then. We now have a new CEO at the helm, and this latest proposal would also include Celtic rather than excluded.

So, the offer from some of Europe’s elite clubs could be a more enticing one to turn down on this occasion for those in the boardroom.

However, similar to the fans of English Premier League sides, the Celtic support would simply be opposed to the idea, and any suggestion that the club were considering their stance would be met with an overwhelming reaction from the fan base, in my opinion.

So, it would be in the club’s best interests to remain by their original stance, which they held in March 2021, as it would otherwise lead to an extremely negative reaction from the Parkhead faithful.

We await more news or developments on these early reports, with more hopefully being revealed in the coming days and weeks.
