Celtic target Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo is to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to the Scottish champions. The 24-year-old is said to be very close to completing a £3million move from Austrian side Rapid Vienna, and will bolster the club’s full-back options.

Neil Lennon is currently having to play winger Jonny Hayes at left-back following the departure of Emilio Izaguirre and injury to Kieran Tierney.

But he could have a new recruit in time for their Champions League opener against FK Sarajevo next Tuesday. The Hoops have until Thursday evening to register Mbombo for the first of a potential four European qualifiers.

It seems as if a move is close too with STV reporting that Mbombo is to undergo a Celtic medical imminently.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Austrian giants posted a message in their native tongue on Twitter – informing fans that Mbombo had been allowed to leave their training camp.

They said: “Today Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo is no longer in Bad Zell. Our number five received permission to leave the training camp yesterday. If there is more news about him, we will get back to you.”

If medical goes well, could Mbombo start in Bosnia?

It will be interesting to see if Neil Lennon throws the Belgian in from the start on Tuesday evening. Celtic can’t afford to take Sarajevo lightly at all given their strong home record and the tough conditions that await us over in Bosnia.

Mbombo may not be too familiar with his teammates but he is surely a better option that Hayes at left-back. The Aberdeen man has done a job in the unfamiliar position but he can’t be seen as a long-term option.

Mbombo possesses immense pace and that could be crucial as we aim to counter attack and score a few away goals. It’s a big decision for Lennon to make, but at least he now has the choice.

The Belgian looks like a good bit of business. Hopefully we can now find a similar rated player on the other side of defence.
