Celtic are arranging a medical and work permit for VVV-Venlo striker Georgios Giakoumakis, according to a report.

The Daily Record state that Celtic are set to sign the Greek striker for £2.1m, with performance bonuses attached. The 26-year-old has held face-to-face and virtual meetings with Ange Postecoglou, according to the report.

The report stats that, as with Edouard’s signing from PSG, VVV-Venlo have a percentage of any future sale attached to Giakoumakis’ move.

The Greek striker scored a whopping 26 goals in 30 appearances last season. That’s despite his club being relegated from the Eredivisie. While adept at making chances, VVV-Venlo were one of the leakier outfits in the Dutch top flight in 20-21.

The Daily Record suggest that Giakoumakis had more lucrative offers on the table. German side Werder Bremen, themselves relegated in 20-21, plus an offer from the Qatari Stars League, have been turned down by the striker.

This is a transfer that’s been led by the Celtic boss. Himself of Greek origin, the Bhoys manager has been aggressive in his sales pitch to Giakoumakis. It’s the same determination that’s landed top talents like Joe Hart, Kyogo Furuhashi and Josip Juranovic.

Ange is at the wheel as Celtic make moves for Giakoumakis arrival

Within the last hour, we shared a report that stated Celtic were close to agreeing terms with Giakoumakis. Within a very short time-frame, it seems the deal is all but arranged.

That is, barring any last minute hiccups from his medical, or work permit application. However, there’s nothing to suggest either won’t be a formality.

It really is interesting to see how aggressively Postecoglou has been recruiting for the club. When he was announced alongside Dom McKay, the new CEO of Celtic said he was going to wait before launching a restructuring of the footballing department.

That was after months of talk about a Director of Football. However, the all-encompassing Postecoglou seems to be taking a lead and negotiating with top transfer targets.

Undoubtedly, some names would’ve been suggested to him before he joined. However, most of the moves made this summer have come a little out of nowhere. Whatever ideas any of us had about who’d be in the door have been, frankly, blown away.

As for Giakoumakis? He has the requisite tools to be a success in Scotland. Prolific, physical but technically gifted, he might not be the forward presser that Postecoglou might typically want.

However, if it’s Ange taking the lead on this one, he’ll no doubt have a plan for him. And that plan, we assume, involves a lot of goals for Celtic.
