A report from the Daily Record has outlined how much Celtic are trying to hold out for as they remain locked in talks over Odsonne Edouard.

The report states that Leicester City believe they could tempt the Hoops with a £15million bid. Given that Edouard is into the final year of his contract, it’s no surprise to see suitors try to bag him on the cheap.

However, the Record claim that Celtic are trying to hold out for no less than £20m for their prized asset. This comes after buying him for £9m from PSG back in 2018. It’s also said to be down to a hefty sell-on fee that the Parkhead club would have to pay.

Yet the source claims that Brendan Rodgers knows the need to move quickly on this one. With Arsenal also on the chase, they’ll know the need to try and get a deal done swiftly before rivals come in.

Edouard has had a season to forget as a collective with Celtic. Even so, the Frenchman has still managed to rattle home 22 goals in 40 appearances [Transfermarkt].

Celtic need to get as much as they can for Odsonne Edouard; £20m would be just the ticket

If Celtic are able to bag £20m for Edouard, then they should give themselves a big pat on the back. That would be a superb piece of business given our current situation this season.

Yes, there were times when Eddy was being discussed in fees that were double that. However, we have to take everything into consideration here. Not only is he into the final year of his contract, but his form has dipped.

Edouard also made absolutely no impact in European football this season, and didn’t impress in our big domestic matches either. He hasn’t performed against Rangers this term, and has been part of one of the worst seasons in the club’s history.

Unfortunately, all of this matters when it comes to selling him on. It’s why we’re not going to be getting £30m or £35m for his services. Had he had a stormer of a campaign, his fee could’ve been a lot more. We’re still lucky in a sense that he broke the 20-goal mark. Goodness knows what we may have to had settled for without that milestone being reached.

But Celtic can be satisfied if they can get Leicester up to £20m. There’s nothing wrong with using the reported interest to our advantage here. Before rivals come in for Eddy, it’s wise to inform Leicester that £20m and he’s theirs. It’s not as if that’s breaking the bank for a top-four Premier League club.

It’s important we play hardball. We have a hard and expensive enough summer on our hands. Edouard’s sale will be key to that funding. Hopefully, we bleed this for everything we can get.
