Many have assumed in recent weeks that Josip Juranovic has one foot out of the door at Celtic after being reported to have rejected a contract offer at the club, but it’s not as clear-cut as that.

Sky Sports have now reported this weekend that talks did indeed break down prior to the World Cup but that Celtic and Juranovic’s representatives are set to re-open discussions after the tournament, suggesting there’s still a decent chance of improved terms being agreed.

Of course, that depends on other clubs’ interest in the January transfer window too. Juranovic is thought to have admirers in bigger leagues which could lead to a bid that Celtic are tempted to cash in on.

The Croatian has shown no indication of being unhappy at the Bhoys and has remained a trusted presence in Ange Postecoglou’s first-team.

He started all six of Celtic’s Champions League group stage matches, showing how rated he is by the coaching staff.

No-one is too important to leave, however, meaning the Bhoys are in a very strong position depending on how the market plays out over the next two months.

Celtic have also protected themselves against any exit after bringing Canadian international right-back Alistair Johnston to the club, who faced Juranovic’s Croatia at the World Cup.

Regardless of how it all plays out, the Bhoys are likely to benefit.
