Celtic announced the signing of defender Alistair Johnston this afternoon, becoming the club’s second signing of the winter transfer window.
Like the transfer of Yuki Kobayashi, the Bhoys have prepared his arrival well in advance of the window officially opening on January 1st, concluding business with CF Montreal without any issues.
But how much did the Bhoys pay?

The Daily Record report the deal to sign him is worth up to £3m, 10% of which has gone to the defender himself given the terms of his contract with the Canadian side.
It’s in the region of a few signings Ange Postecoglous has brought to the Bhoys over the last 18 months – those low-to-mid range seven-figure fees that Celtic can potentially profit from in future.
As always, when it comes to transfers, fees don’t guarantee the quality or footballing worth of the player.
So far under Postecoglou, we can put trust in the club’s scouting and the manager’s eye for the right fit, given the success of most of his signings.
Johnston has a strong profile and significant experience, especially with Canada for whom he’s already won over 30 caps and played at a major international tournament.
This is his biggest career step to date and Celtic are almost guaranteed a committed and ambitious player in return of their investment.
If the quality follows, we’ll be on to another recruitment winner, with potentially serious upside on resale value far down the line.
