Report: Schalke preparing to sell Welsh international Rabbi Matondo; Celtic are 'very interested'
Recently promoted German side Schalke are preparing to sell Welsh winger Rabbi Matondo, who has reportedly attracted interest from Celtic.
The 21-year old joined Schalke in 2019 at just 18-years old, having come through the Manchester City academy for a reported fee upwards of £10 million [Daily Mail].
However, it hasn’t completely worked out for the winger in Germany, having spent loan spells away from the club over the past two seasons.
The winger recently spent time on loan at Cercle Brugge, scoring ten goals in his 27 appearances for the club and was nominated for the young player of the year award in Belgium [South Wales Echo].
Despite a positive spell with the Belgian side, Cercle Brugge recently announced they wouldn’t be taking up their £3.5 million option to buy on the Welsh internationalist after failing to agree a deal with the player.
According to a report from German outlet WAZ, as Matondo approaches the final 12 months of his contract, Schalke will be looking to offload the winger during this summer window.
This could attract the interest of Ange Postecoglou’s side, who was recently linked with the 21-year old.
Guardian journalist Will Unwin reported recently that both Celtic and Glasgow rivals Rangers had taken an interest in Matondo, alongside Belgian team Anderlecht, before Cercle Brugge announced they wouldn’t be taking up their option to buy agreement.
A move back to the UK could seem likely, after the departure of Anderlecht coach Vincent Kompany, who came close to an agreement with the winger at his previous club.
Rabbi isn’t the first Matondo Celtic have been linked to this window.
With the right-winger’s links to his former side Manchester City, it may not surprise some to see Celtic linked with Rabbi Matondo.
Funnily enough, he isn’t the first Matondo that Ange Postecoglou’s side has been linked with during the early stages of the summer window.
Off the back of an impressive spell in Belgium, the Schalke winger is likely to have a number of suits. Especially having already turned down moves back to the Belgian league.
A move to Celtic, and playing Champions League football could be an enticing offer for Matondo, who will be looking to keep his spot in the Wales squad after qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
