Scottish football’s 42 clubs have not yet been able to reach agreement on what to do about ending the season should the game go back into lockdown, the Scottish Daily Express reports.
The report (Print edition, back page, 03/11/20200) discloses that no consensus has been reached between the clubs regarding a host of contingency measures put to the clubs in a questionnaire by the SPFL board, who wanted permission to call the season without taking a vote amongst the clubs.
The report also discloses that the clubs are set to vote to reject an SPFL motion that teams unable to fulfil fixtures due to Covid-19 outbreaks would automatically lose that game 3-0.
No shock that clubs can’t agree
It is not really a surprise that the teams haven’t been able to come to a consensus yet when it comes to ending the season. Look at the moaning last season from the likes of Hearts and Rangers when it came to voting to ending the season early.
There will have to be a consensus reached eventually, especially as there could well be the prospect of another lockdown looming in the future. Hopefully the clubs, including Celtic, come to an agreement sooner rather than later.
Interesting to get Lawwell’s thoughts on the matter
It would be interesting to get Peter Lawwell’s thoughts on the questionnaire that was submitted to the clubs by the SPFL.
As for the forfeit fixtures motion being rejected, that seems like the sensible idea. It might not be the fault of teams if a player gets Covid-19, and that leads to a club having to self-isolate for two weeks, for example.
Clubs shouldn’t be punished for the actions of one individual. Postponing games is fine. However, forfeiting fixtures seems like a step too far.
Hopefully Scottish football won’t be forced into another shut down like it was last season. It is a good sign that professional sports are still going ahead. Celtic will hope that the season continues for as long as possible as the Hoops seem to be in good form once more.
