Report: Vakoun Bayo set for Celtic return this week
Vakoun Bayo looks set to return to Celtic following his loan at Ligue 2 side Toulouse last season.
Bayo has only made two starts for the Bhoys since arriving as a January signing in 2019. He didn’t make much progress in former boss Neil Lennon’s plans. His last start for Celtic came way back in September 2019 against Partick Thistle in the League Cup.
Last season he was sent out on a year-long loan at Toulouse, who also held an option to buy the forward.
However, as reported by The Daily Record, it’s increasingly looking like he won’t be staying in France.
The French side, who narrowly missed out on promotion, have already announced another loan player as being acquired permanently without mention of the Ivorian or further transfer business. With Bayo’s manager on loan, Patrice Garande, also leaving the club, the striker is set to return to Celtic.
The Record say that Bayo is now expected to report at Celtic pre-season training when the non-international players regroup on June 17th.
Will Vakoun Bayo have a chance of Celtic redemption?
Bayo scored a healthy 13 goals on loan last season, the vast majority of which came in a burst of 2021 scoring between January and May. Initially slow to impress, he eventually became an important part of the Toulouse attack.
His aerial threat is undoubted. With Celtic badly needing striking options this summer it would make sense to give Bayo another look. Especially with a new manager in the door.
We shouldn’t be relying on him or halting any transfer plans. But having him put through his paces at Lennoxtown and perhaps giving him some friendly action would help Ange Postecoglou make a final decision on him.
I won’t be holding my breath, but let’s keep an open mind.
In other news, Yokohama F Marinos capitalise on Celtic appointment.
