Reported six-figure Sky demand per cancelled game puts pressure on SPFL to complete season

A report in the Scottish Daily Mail will make Celtic and the rest of the SPFL determined to make sure that the season is played to completion.

The report in the Scottish Daily Mail (print edition, back page, 04/11/20) details that the 42 SPFL clubs will possibly have to pay Sky £520,000 per game for any live Premiership games that are postponed thanks to the season ending early.

Would be a heavy price to pay for clubs

The report goes on to state that 48 live Premiership games are due to be broadcast this season. If that number is curtailed, then Sky want to get some of the money back. The broadcaster is reportedly demanding that it will be paid for any cancelled games.

Let’s say, for example, that the season has to be curtailed after only 43 live games. That would mean that the clubs would have to pay £2.6m between them.

In these uncertain financial times, that would be a real blow to the 42 clubs in Scotland. Therefore, the SPFL will be determined that the league can be completed.

Of course, a way to help pay for any potential fines would be to get fans back into stadiums. That would give clubs a much-needed revenue boost. However, that doesn’t look to be happening any time soon for the majority of clubs in Scotland. The exception could be clubs in Tier One areas.

As reported by 67HH, Ross County have applied to have 750 fans attend their game against Livingston on Friday.

Hopefully the reported threat remains just that, and the season can be completed. Even though Celtic fully deserved to win the title last season, it was a shame that the players never got to celebrate that achievement on the pitch.

Hopefully the Hoops players will get the chance to celebrate winning 10 in a row on the pitch, even if the stands will likely remain empty.

For the time being, Scottish football goes on, and Celtic are due to be live on Sky Sports this Sunday against Motherwell.
