Celtic midfielder Luca Connell has been released by the club, according to a report from the Scottish Daily Express.

The 21-year old joined from Bolton Wanderers under former manager Neil Lennon in 2019 with high hopes surrounding the Ireland youth internationalist.

However, the midfielder struggled to make his mark at Celtic Park and didn’t make a single competitive appearance for the Hoops, only appearing in pre-season friendlies.

During the last two seasons, Connell has spent time on loan at Scottish side Queens Park, playing a key role in helping the Spiders to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Scottish Championship.

Coming into the final year of his deal with the club, many expected this summer to be the midfielder’s last chance at earning the opportunity in the first team for the Bhoys.

However, the Scottish Daily Express has reported that Celtic have chosen not to take up the option for Connell to remain with the club next year, and he is now considering his options as a free agent elsewhere.

The talented midfielder certainly won’t be short of options both in Scotland and south of the border. Many sides will already be queuing up, ready to take him on board.

It is a shame things didn’t work out for Connell with Celtic, and his talent will be utilised elsewhere.

But, given his lack of progress within the first team at Celtic, this move feels like the correct one in order for the young Irishman to go and further his career elsewhere.

We wish him all the best at his next club.
