Amongst the former Celtic heroes taking part in the club’s Player of the Year awards ceremony at the Hydro on Sunday was Ronny Deila.

The Norwegian has been in Glasgow all weekend, also taking in Saturday’s derby against Rangers and revisiting the scene of his trophy triumphs as Celtic manager back in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons.

Deila won two league titles and a Scottish League Cup during that time, part of the Bhoys’ incredible nine-in-a-row run.

He still has a big fondness for the city and Celtic supporters, recalling what he was told by Peter Lawwell when he first joined the club in the wake of Neil Lennon’s first managerial exit.

Ronny Deila relishes return to Celtic Park

Speaking to Celtic TV, Deila said: “It’s fantastic to be back. It’s something that I’ve looked forward to for a long time because I’ve been busy every week with other jobs. I’ve never had the chance to get back again.

“Eight, nine years can go and it’s unbelievable to see and feel the atmosphere, to feel the fans and the family feeling of the club. I’m very, very proud and happy to be here.”

Asked about attending the win over Rangers: “It was a great game, especially the first half. They showed they were the better team and the championship is almost there now. Another trophy in and hopefully we’ll do it in the cup final as well.”

Reflecting on the overall experience of having the Celtic job, Deila continued: “I remember Peter Lawwell said to be me when I signed, ‘Life will never be the same.’

“I feel that. I spent years in New York and I got recognised more for being the Celtic manager than being the New York manager. It says something about the size of the club. To be a part of that history is huge for me.”

It’s great to see him back in town after all these years. Don’t leave it so long next time, Ronny!
