Roy Keane had a career many young kids dream of having, including a small stint at Celtic.
The no-nonsense midfielder is best remembered for his trophy-laden success in the colours of Manchester United where he captained them to a Treble in 1999.
Keane started his career in Cork, Ireland before that road led him to play for the legendary Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest.
That’s when Sir Alex Ferguson snapped him up and he became world-famous for the all-dominant Manchester United, before leaving abruptly in 2005 and joining the final club of his career, Celtic.
Yes, it was short-lived and injury also played its part, but he still managed to win a League Cup and the Premiership title, including that masterclass at Ibrox.
Since then, Keane has become a no-nonsense pundit and has entertained viewers with his short, sharp, but brutally honest assessments of players and teams.
And one interesting topic was discussed on the latest episode of The Overlap…

Roy Keane on his support for Celtic, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest
Keane has openly stated that he grew up supporting Tottenham Hotspur, before becoming affectionate for the clubs that he played for.
But does he still support those teams today?
When Gary Neville asked him that question, Keane made the point as clear as possible ‘I wouldn’t say I am a fan’ and how he ‘doesn’t lose sleep’ over Manchester United, Celtic or Forest going through troubles.
Although, Keane did admit that he still has a ‘soft spot’ for the likes of Celtic and he is ‘grateful’ for what they provided him.
“Is it okay to support two clubs,” asked Neville. “I think, if one is in the Premier League, you can’t support two teams in the same league, I don’t think.
“You can’t support Manchester United or Leicester, or Tottenham. I don’t think. You have got to choose. I think that’s difficult. I think if you have an affinity for a club you have played for a long time (then that’s okay).”
Keane responded: “But do you have that? I don’t have that with the clubs I played for. I don’t feel.”
Neville interrupted: “You do support Manchester United, don’t you?’ And Keane stated: “No, I don’t support Man United, absolutely not. I don’t support Man United. I don’t support Nottingham Forest.”
Neville added: “When you are watching Man United, you feel more emotional about the game.”
Keane stated: “No, you have more of an insight about how it works at the club and the expectation. I wouldn’t say I am a fan. The results wouldn’t be making or breaking my weekend. I wouldn’t be going home, ‘yeah, get in there it was a great win or heavy loss’. I would be looking at it in a professional way.
“I grew up in Ireland remember. Of course, I played for the club and you are grateful for that. I say you have a soft spot for them. The results wouldn’t be making or breaking your weekend. The same for Forest and Celtic. The clubs I was involved in. Absolutely not.”
How many trophies did Roy Keane win in his career?
There is a reason why Keane is regarded as one of the greats of the game and his trophy cabinet speaks for itself.
It’s littered with every trophy possible and it epitomised his time on the pitch because he covered every blade of grass.
| Manchester United trophies | 1x Champions League, 7x English champion, 4x FA Cup, 4x English Super Cup & 1x Intercontinental Cup |
| Celtic trophies | 1x Scottish champion & 1x Scottish League Cup |
It’s just a shame Keane didn’t play more games for Celtic because it would have been even more memorable.
But 19 trophies to his name is something beyond special.
