Sam Allardyce and Alan Stubbs on if Martin O’Neill will return to Celtic amid Wilfried Nancy noise

What a mess Celtic are in right now.

But let’s be honest, it sums up Celtic’s season, starting with the failure to qualify for Champions League football, and now Wilfried Nancy being under immense pressure.

Celtic have lost five games under Nancy, after he replaced Martin O’Neill in the Parkhead dugout at the start of December.

One man who was pretty vocal about O’Neill not staying on at Celtic during his interim spell was Sam Allardyce, and now he has reacted to the club’s current situation, alongside Alan Stubbs.

Will Martin O’Neill return to Celtic amid Wilfried Nancy pressure?

Before Nancy could even set foot into Glasgow, Allardyce was already throwing verbal punches at Celtic’s new coach, including calling him a ‘school teacher.’

Now that Nancy is on the thinnest of ice, it was put to the former England manager whether O’Neill would make a second comeback to the champions of Scotland.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Podcast, whilst Allardyce doesn’t think O’Neill will return this season, he laid down one condition, and one condition only, that could result in it happening.

Natalie Pike: “Question for both of you. Do you think we will see Martin back at Celtic this season?”

Allardyce: “No.”

Pike: “Alan is thinking.”

Stubbs: “I am not sure. If he (Nancy) doesn’t come through the next couple of games, and certainly the Rangers game. I don’t think he will come through.”

Allardyce: “I think if they go back for Martin, and Martin goes back and says, ‘I’ll have this year and next year. And I will come back.’

“He could use his weight of popularity and what he did when they were in desperate need to say, ‘I will stay.'”

O’Neill and Nancy’s records at Celtic this season

Were the performances under O’Neill great on the whole? Mostly they weren’t, but a few gems were thrown in there, especially Celtic’s win in Feyenoord in the Europa League.

The issue with Nancy is that everything has looked and felt complicated. There seems to be little improvement and optimism that things will change anytime soon.

Celtic host Rangers this weekend, and to put it in simple words, Nancy can’t lose that, and if he does, then he simply has to go.
