Chris Sutton changes stance on Wilfried Nancy, compares Celtic to the Titanic

It’s fair to say that Wilfried Nancy’s first month at Celtic could’ve gone better.

Between an unprecedented run of four defeats in his first four matches and a string of badly-taken comments in the media, he hasn’t done himself many favours.

A completely new formation has seen some of Celtic’s most important players moving to new roles entirely, whilst other players have simply looked out of their depth.

Nancy hasn’t been helped by the team’s brilliant run of form under Martin O’Neill, which was abruptly halted ahead of one of the most important weeks of the season.

After Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Motherwell, many in the support are calling for Nancy to be sacked. Chris Sutton has been easing the blame on Nancy, but has now changed his stance.

Chris Sutton on Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy

Nancy isn’t the only problem at Celtic – this has been one of the Hoops’ most dysfunctional seasons in recent memory.

But a performance as bad as the one at Fir Park on Tuesday is bound to cause panic.

And for Sutton, in his column for the Daily Record, the club are now facing a situation where sacking him is a serious possibility.

He said: “The Celtic board need to keep this one very simple because there’s only one question to consider.

“Do Celtic stand the best chance of winning the Premiership with Nancy at the helm? Based on what we have seen, the answer to that is a resounding no.

“I’ve been watching Titanic Sinks Tonight on the iPlayer and that ship’s captain dithered, took 45 minutes before realising the seriousness of the situation and that his unsinkable ship will sink. The rest is history.

“So, with a manager who is set in his ways and players who can’t adapt to them making it highly likely Celtic will sink and not win the league without making change to one of those aspects, the onus falls squarely onto the powers-that-be at the club.

“Either back him with quality players to fit Wilf’s way immediately or make the decision to get a more pragmatic, adaptable manager and sack him.

“Put simply, this situation can’t be allowed to drift. Nancy is attempting to play fantasy football with a squad who can’t do it. Well this is the real world.

“Forget the Rangers game being make-or-break for him. This situation is far, far bigger than just one match, even if it’s the biggest of the lot.

“I’m always in for long-term planning and actually hate myself after such a short space of time for even hinting that a guy should go.

“But, if Celtic choose to keep him and take a long-term approach, he needs five or six new faces. Not at the end of the month. Now.

“Listen, I don’t like being knee-jerk with things, but if he stays and that doesn’t happen, I think Celtic are screwed.”

Is this the sort of player Celtic should be targeting?

What does Wilfried Nancy need at Celtic in January?

Nancy is seemingly still Celtic’s man, and with so much importance riding on January, he is bound to make some major decisions on transfers.

Julian Araujo is seemingly on his way to Celtic, giving them a much-needed wing-back profile.

Further forward, Wessam Abou Ali and Diego Rossi are both players Nancy is considering bringing from Columbus Crew.

Celtic reportedly want three defenders in the window, after the termination of Jahmai Simpson-Pusey’s loan move.
