Scott Brown says Celtic’s next captain after Callum McGregor is already in the building

Scott Brown and Callum McGregor have led Celtic in very different ways over the years.

One is very loud and outspoken, and the opponents were fully aware that Brown is the Celtic captain. At the same time, McGregor is quiet, but leads from the front by being brave on the ball.

Either way, both have been successful, as McGregor continues to wear the captain’s armband with pride, but who is the next man to take that role?

Brown thinks it’s going to be Kieran Tierney, and he feels it will come once McGregor hangs up his boots.

“I think Kieran (Tierney) will be the next one,” said Brown.

“Cal (McGregor) still has a lot to offer. Then I think it’s natural for Kieran to step in for captaining once Cal retires, if I am honest.”

You can pick one Celtic player to replace Callum McGregor as captain..

Scott Brown backs Kieran Tierney to be the next Celtic captain

Many Celtic fans were delighted to see Tierney return to the club this season, and it could be argued that he has been the club’s Player of the Year.

When Brown left Celtic in 2021, it was obvious that McGregor was the man to take over, and he has enjoyed many trophy-laden years since.

But while Brown can’t see who takes the leadership role beyond McGregor and Tierney, he is certain that the champions of Scotland are sorted for a good few years yet, as he told The Warm-Up.

Chris Sutton: “Bringing it up more up to date with Celtic, people look at your time at the club, they view you as a leader. You had Neil Lennon from my time. You have Callum McGregor.

“Who is going to be the next leader at Celtic? Is there someone from the current squad?”

Brown: “I think Kieran (Tierney) will be the next one. Cal (McGregor) still has a lot to offer. Then I think it’s natural for Kieran to step in for captaining once Cal retires, if I am honest. I think Cal has got a few good years in him.

“After that, looking there, I don’t know too much about the young ones if I’m honest.”

Who else could be a contender for Celtic’s next captain?

One player who instantly springs to mind is the man on the other flank, Alistair Johnston.

It has been an injury-plagued campaign for Johnston, who has assumed the captaincy roles on some occasions.

But when talking to the media, on whatever platform, Johnston sticks out like a sore thumb, and it seems as though he was made for this role.

Another is rising goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo. Yes, his current priority is to become Celtic’s long-term first-choice shot-stopper.

But Sinisalo also speaks with authority to the media, and he comes across as a strong character in the dressing room.
