Charlie Mulgrew has named the contenders that he thinks Celtic should be looking at to replace Martin O’Neill.

O’Neill returned to management for the first time since 2019 following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation before coming back again after Wilfried Nancy’s 33 days in charge.

The 74-year-old has kept Celtic’s title hopes alive and guided them to a Scottish Cup final, but will need to be replaced and Mulgrew has named the candidates that he thinks the club should look at.

Charlie Mulgrew’s three choices to become the new Celtic manager

Jens Berthel Askou

One of the first names that the former Hoops defender came up with was Jens Berthel Askou of Motherwell.

Fans wanted Askou but Motherwell’s form has dipped of late; however, Mulgrew thinks that the style of play is one that would appeal to Celtic.

He told TalkSPORT, via Glasgow World: “I would take him at Celtic. I know the results have fell a wee bit the last month, but I still think what he’s done with that budget, what he could do with Celtic in Europe potentially, I know they need to get there first, but what he could do next season with that would be interesting.”

Craig Bellamy and Robbie Keane

Next on the former Scotland international’s list is current Wales manager Craig Bellamy.

A former loanee, Bellamy has remained coy on links with the Hoops vacancy, but his future is up in the air after Wales failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Robbie Keane’s close connections to Dermot Desmond have also seen him become a frontrunner, with O’Neill even endorsing Keane for the role, and Mulgrew thinks those two should also be in the conversation.

Should Celtic make a decision on Martin O’Neill’s permanent future before the end of the season?

“You never know who can handle that pressure of being a Celtic manager until they’re in the job,” added Mulgrew. “So you speak about Craig Bellamy, who I think would be a great candidate as well. Robbie Keane’s another one who would do it.”
