Scottish Cup hero Shaun Rooney namechecks his Celtic icons in reaction to Hampden heroics
Shaun Rooney has had an incredible season with St Johnstone and his Hampden heroics mean now he’s on a list with some of his Celtic icons.
The defender has been their goal hero in two national finals at the national stadium against Livingston and Hibernian.
Winning an unbelievable double, the Perth side have emerged from the Scottish football season as the team to have lifted the most trophies.
As I discussed yesterday, they’ve effectively succeeded Celtic as the most dominant team in the country. Tongue in cheek? I’ll keep you guessing.
Rooney is a well-known Celtic fan and mocked Rangers after knocking them out of the cup last month.
So, he was absolutely buzzing to find out he’s now on a list with Henrik Larsson and Tom Rogic.
The 24-year-old is the fifth player this century to score in both cup finals in the same season – Larsson, Rogic, Barry Ferguson and Kris Boyd are the others.
Rooney told The Scottish Sun: “That’s not bad company, especially the one name – Larsson. I’ve never been compared to Larsson and I never will be!
“I remember his final game and Seville too. Then when he came back to Celtic Park for testimonials.
“I probably saw a good three years of him and then he went to Barcelona and Manchester United.
“I’ll take big Tom Rogic too. He is more recent. It’s a great stat to have. Hopefully I can score in two finals again next season!”
Rooney will now embark on a summer of celebration, telling the paper he’ll be getting in the pints, golfing and enjoying a few barbecues, as well as Scotland in the Euros.
Sounds like a plan to me Shaun.
Congratulations on your success!
