The question Michael Stewart and Charlie Mulgrew raised off-air about Celtic winger Sebastian Tounekti’s transfer

Sebastian Tounekti seems to be a godsend for Celtic’s attack.

The Tunisian winger, who was brought to the club from Hammarby on transfer deadline day, has enjoyed a stellar start to life at Celtic Park.

Two man-of-the-match performances in two have left Celtic fans raving about Tounekti, who has dazzled with his direct, creative wide play.

He has earned comparisons to Jota for his natural flair, and in scoring a finely worked opener against Partick Thistle, he showed that he can link up with Kelechi Iheanacho too.

One pundit has joined in on the praise – but there’s one question on his mind.

Michael Stewart on Celtic winger Sebastian Tounekti

Tounekti’s performance at Firhill was a joy to watch, as was his debut against Kilmarnock.

So what is there to be anything other than positive about?

For Michael Stewart, speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club, there is one question.

Stewart said: “Clearly, with Tounekti, this guy’s the difference-maker. On that left side, there’s a constant threat.

“I’d love to know when the first bid was made for Tounekti, and how much. You would love to find that out. It would give you a real insight into what is actually been going on there, because even if it took a couple extra million quid to get that deal done three weeks earlier, it would’ve been worth it.

“Because you look at Tounekti and you see: him coming to join Celtic like he has now, full of confidence and belief, excited about joining a big new club, going into the Champions League qualifiers. I’ll guarantee that privately, [Brendan Rodgers] will say he would have helped them against Kairat.”

Sebastian Tounekti has become a nailed starter for Celtic

Tounekti’s performances have seemingly established him as the new main man in Celtic’s attack.

Despite competition for his place from Daizen Maeda as well as fellow new arrival Michel-Ange Balikwisha, his performances are the most standout at the minute.

How the attack will look around him remains to be seen, but with Iheanacho’s performance also impressing, there is certainly a scenario where Maeda loses his place in the first XI. This would’ve been unthinkable a few months ago.

But with a major Europa League test coming against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday, Rodgers’ current thoughts on his team will become clearer with his next team selection.
