Si Ferry raises key point about Celtic midfield as physicality issues persist since Victor Wanyama

One of Celtic’s biggest issues this season has stemmed from the middle of the park.

Despite Celtic possessing names such as proven winners Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate, or club-record transfer Arne Engels, and SOS calls for Premier League title winner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Celtic’s midfield has continued to underperform, and Si Ferry went to the extreme by claiming that the champions of Scotland are ‘the worst second ball team’ he has ever seen.

Ferry brought up a familiar name of Celtic’s past and suggested that the club have never had a physical presence since Victor Wanyama was in Glasgow.

“Do you not find it mad that Celtic don’t have any physicality in the middle of the pitch?” said Ferry. “The last one was probably Wanyama.”

Celtic told they are ‘the worst second-ball team ever’ amid Victor Wanyama claim

Celtic have not had that rough nature or physical presence in midfield since Wanyama headed for the exit door in 2013, such as the no-nonsense Scott Brown.

But Ferry does raise a valid point that the nasty nature of Celtic’s play has been lost, especially without the ball.

Even with an old-school coach like Martin O’Neill back in the dugout, the Hoops have still proven to be a soft touch, as Ferry expressed his frustration on Open Goal.

“You see, launching it forward, I genuinely think Celtic are the worst second-ball team I have ever seen in my life,” said Ferry.

“Do you not find it mad that Celtic don’t have any physicality in the middle of the pitch? The last one was probably Wanyama.

“They have lacked a physical presence in the middle of the pitch for years.”

Wanyama’s record at Celtic

Wanyama was a cult hero at Celtic, and part of some memorable moments that supporters will remember for a very long time.

Perhaps nothing will ever top Celtic’s win over Barcelona in the Champions League, because Wanyama, who is now 34 and without a club, wasn’t known for his goals, but he found the back of the net on that raucous evening.

The Kenyan star picked up three trophies during his time wearing the famous green and white colours, and he is exactly what Celtic need right now.
