Celtic’s title challenge is being written off too quickly from some sections in the Scottish media, and Martin O’Neill has come out swinging against the narrative with clarity and intent.
There is no attempt to dress the current situation up by the Celtic boss. O’Neill knows there is no room for manoeuvring or further dropped points, with every remaining fixture now proving crucial in the title race.
O’Neill’s honesty matters, but it is only part of the picture. The more important line is that Celtic are ‘far from out of it’, as the Celtic boss challenges the noise that the race is already settled.
O’Neill told Celtic TV, “We don’t have any room for manoeuvring and that gives you even less, in that sense. But we’re far from out of it.
“There’s a massive game on Sunday, really big game that essentially we’ve got to win now. That won’t be easy. Dundee are a strong outfit.
“We just have to be as strong as them. We’ve got three home games and two away, all big matches against the big sides, so we’ve still got it all to play for in that sense.”
Martin O’Neill’s Celtic belief remains despite growing narrative
The urgency is undeniable, and O’Neill does not shy away from it. By calling it a massive game on Sunday, he is reinforcing the reality that Celtic have no margin for error.
That does not weaken the argument for belief, it strengthens it. This is a must-win situation and O’Neill is leaving the Celtic team in no doubt how precarious their title defence is.
This is where the Hoops boss challenges the narrative. Teams that are finished do not speak in terms of opportunity, yet O’Neill is clear Celtic have still got it all to play for.
That is not sentiment, it is fact. There are fixtures remaining, 21 points up for grabs, and until it becomes mathematically impossible, Celtic are still in contention.
O’Neill is right to reject early Celtic title conclusions
The most telling part of this situation is that O’Neill is not alone in pushing back. That stance has already been reinforced internally, with Celtic legend Neil Lennon rejecting claims the title race is over.
Lennon’s words remove any suggestion of misplaced optimism and it shows a consistent understanding that while the title challenge is difficult, it is still not decided.
Writing Celtic out of the race now ignores that the Hoops have been in far tougher situations than this and have still emerged as champions. Pressure does not end a title challenge, only results can do that.
While many Celtic fans will recognise that winning the league is going to be undoubtedly difficult, O’Neill’s comments are what they expect their manager to say.
Celtic must win, and that reality is clear, but so is the fact that this title race is still not over. O’Neill is right to hold that line because that is the standard that is ingrained in the club’s DNA.
