Simon Donnelly spots Premier League boss doing what Wilfried Nancy was criticised for at Celtic

Wilfred Nancy took a fair bit of criticism for his start at Celtic.

That’s putting it mildly. In losing his first four matches, he had a start unprecedented in Celtic’s history, and fans were singing for him to be sacked after his fourth match.

Thankfully, things have slightly stabilised since, and the Hoops have won their last two matches. If they can win their next two against Motherwell and Rangers, Nancy will have regained a good amount of credit in the bank.

When you’re losing games at Celtic, everything you do goes under the microscope, and that’s what happened with Nancy using a tactics board during his first match.

But he isn’t alone in this, as Simon Donnelly has pointed out.

Did Callum McGregor seem particularly annoyed with the Sky Sports Celtic questions?

Nancy defended his use of the board, which was widely ridiculed by Celtic and opposition fans alike.

It was a real ‘welcome to Scottish football’ moment, early in his spell.

But in Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Crystal Palace, Donnelly spotted Thomas Frank doing the same – and he felt it was significant enough for him to point out, to prove his point.

He said on Nancy, during Clyde Superscoreboard: “As long as they’re playing games, the fans will demand that they win the games.

“I’m just watching a bit of the Palace-Spurs game here, and Frank’s standing with his tactics board out there, and I’m thinking back to Wilfried’s first game.

“I just feel like you have to win games. It’s the obvious statement, but all that noise goes away.

“He’s now, after that terrible initial run, got two wins back-to-back, and it’s a lot more positive, still with the knowledge that there’s a title race there.

“They need to get beyond Hearts. It’s a crucial transfer window coming up, it really is. But you have to win games.

“And, they’ve got the two games in the Europa League as well. With the result against Feyenoord, they’ve gave themselves a little chance. But it won’t be easy.”

Wilfried Nancy says he wanted to sign Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren at Columbus Crew.

Thoughts on this Celts?

Ibrahima Diabate and Evan Ferguson have been linked with Celtic as Nancy looks to give his attack some much-needed help.

He could also look towards his old employers, with Diego Rossi linked with Celtic. Wessam Abou Ali’s name has also been mentioned.

In other positions, Jocelin Ta Bi’s name has emerged as a potential reinforcement in the wide areas.

The latest name in the running is Bournemouth wing-back Julian Araujo, who would be a handy addition to the squad for obvious reasons.
