Simon Jordan says he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ by what Martin O’Neill could ‘tragically’ do at Celtic

There is a sense of calmness and trust at Celtic right now.

That’s because Martin O’Neill is in the building, and Celtic supporters are rightfully more optimistic about what could be achieved this season.

That was proven during Celtic’s win over Dundee United at the weekend, as O’Neill returned to the dugout for the second time in as many months following Wilfried Nancy’s sacking.

During that time, the Irishman had been sitting in the talkSPORT studios talking all things Celtic, alongside Simon Jordan, and the former owner is pretty confident as to what will happen from now until the end of the season.

Will we hunt Hearts down and win the title?

Simon Jordan on Martin O’Neill winning the league at Celtic

Celtic are still behind in the title race, and in truth, they have been for some while, as Hearts continue to lead the way and are six points clear of the champions.

But Jordan thinks Celtic will ‘tragically’ win the title this season, not because he doesn’t want O’Neill to get the job done, but because he thinks it’s better if the Jambos claim glory, as he told talkSPORT.

Not since 1985 has a team outside of Celtic or Rangers won Scottish football’s main crown, so you can understand the neutral’s appetite for something different.

Either way, Jordan lauded O’Neill as a ‘sensible’ manager, and what makes the 73-year-old so good at what he does compared to the dross supporters had to watch in between his two interim spells in charge.

“I fully expect and demand of Martin O’Neill that he wins this league,” said Jordan. “January 25th, he is playing Hearts.

“He managed to avoid that fixture the first time around. Skated off without that fixture because it was given to Wilfried Nancy, and ultimately, he didn’t get the outcome he wanted in those games.

“Martin will be benchmarking himself. He is just a sensible manager. He is 73-years-old. He knows how to manage Celtic. He knows how to make the best of the players he has got there. He wants to supplement the playing squad. You heard him say it.

“So, with that in mind, the players are culpable for the performances they put in for the manager. They shouldn’t get away with it, but they will.

“Martin will go in there. Do a really sensible job. And, I wouldn’t be surprised, tragically, that Celtic wins the league. Not tragically because I don’t want them to win the league. Not tragically because I don’t want Martin O’Neill to win it.

“But I want Hearts to win it. Unfortunately, I think they might get caught by Celtic.”
