Sky Sports have today announced an extension to their current Scottish Premiership television deal.

The TV giants now hold rights to the biggest Scottish league matches until 2029, with many of them featuring Celtic.

In a press release, they say they: ‘will broadcast more Scottish Professional Football League matches than ever before’, with up to 60 per season being shown from 2024/25 onwards.

The minimum amount of matches per season is widely understood to be 42, as per the original report from the Guardian’s Ewan Murray in August.

Of course, this deal has received plenty of criticism with supporters questioning why the SPFL are so keen to tie the league up in a lengthy contract given the changing nature of sports broadcasting, and new players like Viaplay in town.

Nevertheless, Sky have won the rights and will have Celtic’s biggest league matches on TV for the considerable future.

Sky Sports set to cover more Celtic glory

Of course, by the time the contract is up, Celtic will just have completed their eighth consecutive title win, with Ange Postecoglou also leading the side to back-to-back Champions League triumphs.

While the latter is perhaps a little far-fetched, and Ange may have departed long before 2029, another decade of domestic dominance is surely more likely than not.

Yes, Rangers are a better side than they were several years ago. And Hearts may progress with more European group stage football. But recent history suggests that we’re in for more years of Celtic joy.

With Postecoglou building a young, vibrant squad, and one title already under our belt, more glory looks likely.

If Sky Sports want to be part of that, then we’ve not got a problem. As long as they promise to show the celebrations.
