The Celtic Twitter account invited fans to take a trip down memory lane on Friday. The account asked the Hoops support for their favourite ever Glasgow derby victories.

This was on the back of Thursday’s fourth anniversary of the 5-1 win over Rangers in 2016. Many famous victories over Celtic’s rivals were chosen by fans.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, one victory that was frequently mentioned was the 6-2 triumph in August 2000. That game, which had its 20 anniversary last month, has to go down as one of Celtic’s best ever derby wins.

New era began in style

The Hoops tore Rangers apart, with Chris Sutton making himself a club hero with two goals. Henrik Larsson also helped himself to a double, as the Martin O’Neill era began in style.

One fan on Twitter described it as ‘the best day’. That is a sentiment that every Celtic fan will agree with.

Another game that featured in the choices was a classic win which kept the Hoops in the title race in 2008. Celtic looked to have blown the chance of a win when Scott McDonald missed a penalty. However, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink popped up with a priceless headed winner to give the Hoops a 2-1 win. Lets’ not forget Shunsuke Nakamura’s thunderbolt strike in that game also.

Just five weeks after that game took place, Celtic had overhauled a points deficit and were Champions for the third season in a row. That win really was vital, with one fan on Twitter suggesting that the goal ‘saved our season’.

Team made a statement

Another game named was Celtic’s first win at Ibrox in six years in the year 2001. Martin O’Neill’s side had already won the league that season. However, they travelled to Ibrox looking to make a statement, and the team certainly did.

After a goalless first-half Lubomir Moravcik took centre-stage. He scored two great solo goals to put the Hoops firmly in command of the game. Then, the icing on the cake was provided by Henrik Larsson. His 50th goals of the season sealed a 3-0 win, and a wonderful day of Celtic celebration was complete. As one fan on Twitter says it was a ‘nifty 50’.
