Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin is hopeful of keeping ahold of Celtic loanee Liam Scales ahead of talks between the Dons and Hoops hierarchy.

The 24-year-old has spent the opening half of the campaign on loan at Pittodrie and has been a key part of their defence.

Scales has made 19 appearances under Jim Goodwin, helping Aberdeen to third place in the table after 16 games.

It is fair to say his quest for more regular game time has been a success, having already made more appearances for the Reds than he did at Parkhead.

Although Scales is currently enjoying his spell up North, the Bhoys do hold the option to recall the defender from his loan in January.

Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin confirmed at the weekend that talks are set to commence with the Celtic hierarchy to confirm whether the Irishman will spend the rest of the campaign at Pittodrie.

The former St Mirren boss is confident he will have the Celtic man for the rest of the season but is still waiting to receive confirmation as the January window approaches.

He said [Daily Record]: “The chairman (Dave Cormack) was due to speak to Celtic’s board to get a feel for what their thoughts are.

“I know that Steven Gunn (Director of Football) has been on to Celtic already. I think we will get confirmation on that one pretty soon.

“Obviously, Celtic have signed another defender who will be coming into their fold in January. The boy (Moritz) Jenz was on the bench for them on Saturday, and Starfelt is back now.

“Realistically, I’m not sure they will be needing Liam back, but we will have to wait to get that confirmed.”

Celtic likely to allow Liam Scales to continue loan stay with Aberdeen.

Although Celtic do have the option to cut Liam Scales’ time at Aberdeen short, it feels more likely he will at least see out the season there.

Goodwin has made it clear he has intentions of signing Scales on a permanent basis, so he is almost guaranteed game time at Pittodrie.

As the Dons manager mentions, the Bhoys’ defensive options are now stacking up, too, with the return of Carl Starfelt and also the signing of Yuki Kobayashi.

So, it is best for the player to say in an environment he has settled in to and will feature regularly in the second half of the campaign.

Scales has yet to play for Aberdeen since their last fixture before the break in November. This was due to him not being able to play against his parent side on Saturday.

However, the former Shamrock Rovers man is expected to return later on this evening when Aberdeen take on the Hoops Glasgow rivals, Rangers.
