Kris Commons doesn’t believe Ange Postecoglou will be leaving Celtic this summer – and certainly not to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs are the latest in a long line of English clubs who have been credited with an interest in appointing Postecoglou. The crazy world of the Premier League loves using the Celtic manager’s name to drum up media intrigue.
Nothing of note is even said to have happened, just that Postecoglou may be on a list of names that Spurs are tracking. No contact between any of the parties involved has been reported. That hasn’t stopped the frenzy of speculation. But there are media voices out there who don’t see it as a realistic prospect and former attacker Commons is one of them.
Postecoglou warned about Spurs ‘mess’
Writing in his Scottish Daily Mail column [29/05 print edition], he said: “Celtic will also be playing Champions League football next season, whereas Spurs won’t even be in Europe at all. You also have to look at the way that Spurs have burned through a succession of managers.
“Ever since they dispensed with Mauricio Pochettino, it’s a club that has just been on a steady decline, lurching from one disaster to another. When a club starts sacking their manager every year, it’s not a good look and they become a far less attractive proposition.
“I look at the Spurs squad and it just strikes me as a mess, to be honest. It’s going to need a major rebuild in the summer. Especially when you consider the fact that their talisman and captain Harry Kane will probably leave this summer.
“I expect Kane will probably end up at Manchester United at the start of next season, so whoever takes the Spurs job will immediately be faced with losing the club’s best player. I just don’t think it’s a job which will get Postecoglou’s juices flowing.”
Postecoglou hasn’t given any indication he’s seeking a Celtic exit. But we’re likely to know a lot more about his intentions in the wake of the Scottish Cup Final. The manager is on the record saying he won’t be discussing any of these links with a treble on the line.
For now, we can look forward to a busy summer and season three under the Australian’s leadership.
