The reason for Brendan Rodgers resigning as the Celtic manager might have just become a bit clearer after Stephen McGowan reveals details of a meeting that was held on Monday.

Rodgers left Celtic on Monday night after tendering his resignation in a move that shocked the vast majority of Hoops supporters.

Until now, there has been no explanation given by Rodgers as to what spurred him to leave Celtic less than halfway through the season.

Whilst the vast majority of fans suspect that Celtic’s transfer policy forced Rodgers out, there has been no hint to the real reason that led the Northern Irishman to quit the club so dramatically. Until now.

Journalist Stephen McGowan has shed some light on a meeting that was requested by Rodgers and it appears that he may have held out an olive branch to the Celtic board.

Brendan Rodgers ‘requested’ meeting to end ‘negativity’ with Celtic

As the mystery of Rodgers’ resignation was surpassed only by Dermot Desmond’s statement on Celtic’s website, McGowan shares what he knows about a meeting that was requested by Rodgers to sort out bad feeling within the club.

McGowan told PLZ Soccer, “As I understand it, there was a meeting on Monday, I think it was asked for by Brendan Rodgers.

“And he wanted to basically thrash things out and say, ‘Look, the negativity and the situation in the club is not good, and we need to address this. So we have two choices, either we reset the relationship, and you decide I am part of the club, and we go again and we move forward together, or we decide that if I have no future for the club, then that should be that’.

“I think he got a call later the afternoon, after the meeting was terminated and his resignation was accepted.

“So it is a scenario where it’s quite clear that, I think the two sides have just had to come to some kind of conclusion, some kind of resolution.

“And I think probably for both sides, it is the right resolution.”

When Celtic fans could hear from Brendan Rodgers

As yet, there has been nothing official from Rodgers as Celtic fans wait to hear his version of events.

It is rumoured that Rodgers is preparing a Celtic rebuttal as the former Parkhead gaffer appears to be approaching the LMA in England sometime in the near future.

But until then, Celtic have a big game against Rangers coming up in the Premier Sports Cup and after the 4-0 win over Falkirk last night, fans will be more confident heading into this game under Martin O’Neill.
