Strong words from Callum McGregor as he addresses target on Celtic's back that just got bigger
Callum McGregor was on media duty this afternoon to promote a new book being released by Celtic on his life and career so far.
He was in fine form, taking part in an event with both traditional press and the group of ‘fan media’, with 67 Hail Hail attending the latter.
We wanted to hear from the captain about his personal motivations going into the new season after he spoke so candidly last year about getting over ‘the slap in the face’ of losing the title in 2020/21.
McGregor told 67 Hail Hail: “When you become champions, the target on your back becomes even bigger. You have to work even harder. You have to go the extra mile. You have to do more. You have to help your team. You have to run harder, with your mates.
“Everybody wants your scalp, so you have to be prepared for that. You’ve got what everyone wants. To stay at the top you have to be super hungry and super motivated. I think whenever the team takes to the pitch, that’s what we have to show.”
Celtic have certainly started with that intent so far in 2022/23, winning nine points from the first nine available, two matches of which were on the road.
Strong starts, late goals, domination of matches, overcoming setbacks – we’ve already seen lots of character in this Celtic side alongside the joy of quality goals and periods of play.
There’s no doubt that more difficult challenges are on the way, both domestically and in Europe. This season is going to be far from easy.
Nonetheless, with McGregor installed as captain and the manager having attracted exceptional talents and personalities to the club, it seems the squad is as motivated as ever to repeat the success they enjoyed so much last term.
In other news, Rivals have just shown a weakness that Celtic can exploit.
