Subway sandwich company attempt to engage in Eddie Howe to Celtic banter; it goes awry

We’ve seen some strange things as Celtic supporters over the years, but Subway sandwiches blasting Eddie Howe?

It’s been hard to watch some of the odder slanging matches in Scottish football over recent years. Ryan Christie v Falkirk, Rangers v Little Mix [BBC], everyone v Joey Barton. Yet, just when you think some kind of normality is returning to our landscape, something so seismic, so impactful, just changes everything.

Subway are dishing out patter about potential Celtic manager Eddie Howe. And it isn’t good patter, either.

The ubiquitous sandwich giants handed out this slice of punditry:

This was in response to a complaint about the fast-food outlet using crisps as an ingredient. It’s good to know that we’ve got our priorities sorted out in the era of Covid-19.

Nobody mentioned football, either. So, despite their lovely green branding, Subway immediately got themselves into hot water with some Celtic supporters. Mostly, because it reads a bit like when Charlie Nicholas tried to come back from Jeff Stelling’s glasses jibe on Sky Sports [YouTube].

Sometimes, all the training you do as a journalist never quite equips you for what’s ahead. This is one of those scenarios.

“Focus on sandwich making”; Celtic supporters react, Eddie Howe will surely be devastated

Again, this is all very strange.

As ever, Celtic fans saw it and immediately got to work ridiculing the fast-food giants.

Eddie Howe: if you’re reading this, sign the contract. Make this stop.
