Anton McElhone departed Celtic this summer.

The Scotsman had been Head of Sports Science at the club from September 2021.

Former Greenock Morton manager McElhone arrived to head up the sports science department after Jack Nayler had left Celtic to join RB Leipzig.

McElhone enjoyed an immensely successful two years at Celtic Park as he details on his LinkedIn profile.

He lists the five domestic trophies from six as a ‘key achievement’ alongside qualifying for back-to-back UEFA Champions League group stages.

There hasn’t been any news on McElhone over the summer and it was assumed he was still at the club.

But a few Scottish outlets, including Football Scotland, have today run some quotes from him talking about his departure from the job.

We can’t actually find the social media post in question, but a look on his LinkedIn page does show that he left his role earlier this summer.

McElhone has his Celtic tenure ending in June 2023, so it is clear that he is no longer employed by the club.

Under the heading, McElhone described some of the duties he carried out in the job.

He says he “managed and led all aspects of the Sports Science department” at the club and was “responsible for the management of 13 members of staff”.

He also worked in conjunction with the medical department, first-team manager and dealt with the women and academy teams too.

It’s not totally clear who, if anyone, has taken McElhone’s job. Glenn Driscoll, who was Head of Performance between 2016 and 2019, has returned to the club under Rodgers this summer.

His job title is different from McElhone’s Head of Sports Science but that could well be a similar role.

Regardless, McElhone has moved on after helping us over the past two seasons. He was an unsung hero and we wish him all of the best going forward.
