Switched-on Hyunjun Yang already making great noises about move to Celtic

Celtic winger Hyunjun Yang seems to be settling in well to life in Scotland.

The South Korean winger made the switch from Gangwon in late July, following weeks of speculation. The 21-year-old has become a semi-regular fixture in the Celtic side since, making the majority of his appearances off the bench and starting the odd match.

In a period where he also earned his first senior international cap, Yang has been acclimatising to his new environment in Scotland. He seems to be doing pretty well in that regard.

“There are three Korean players here including myself so we are helping each other so I’ve had no difficulties settling,” he said during a post-Motherwell press conference.

“The biggest change for me has been the language. I’m having English lessons but I want to improve as quickly as possible so I can communicate by myself without a translator.

“I can catch one or two words usually inside the huddle! So I can just about understand the message.” (The Scotsman)

It is great to hear that Yang is being proactive about learning English, and keen to put himself out of his comfort zone in media outings.

At 21, he is still extremely young and in the very early days of a five-year contract at Celtic. The early signs have been fairly promising.

The attacker is very raw — something that has been highlighted in recent matches. He is a very tricky customer, someone able to weave away from opposition defenders with relative ease.

The obvious issue so far has been his lack of end product. Other than the assist for Matt O’Riley’s clincher at Aberdeen, he hasn’t really produced anything of substance in a Celtic shirt. He’s had real opportunities to do so as well.

We’re confident this will come in time for him. He seems like a very switched-on young guy who is keen to make the most of his talent. We may not see the best of him until next season and beyond.
