The big news today appears to be Russell Martin being on the brink of becoming the next Rangers manager tasked with ending Celtic’s dominance.

The former Southampton boss has been rumoured over the past few days as the man 49ers Enterprises see as the one to take Rangers above Celtic.

With Celtic’s dominance in the Scottish Premiership unmatched over the last four seasons, whoever takes charge at the Ibrox club will have a tough task ahead trying to get the better of Brendan Rodgers.

Fabrizio Romano announced this afternoon on X, “Rangers are closing in on the appointment of Russell Martin as new head coach.

“Former Southampton manager has already accepted the project, ready for new chapter.”

However, what many people might not already know is that Martin has already faced Rodgers twice in Scotland.

When Martin played for Rangers during Rodgers’ first spell as Celtic manager, the Northern Irishman dealt him some serious pain in Scotland.

Martin faced Celtic on two occasions over his loan spell at Rangers back in season 2017/18. The first time was at Celtic Park and it is an afternoon the prospective Ibrox boss will want to forget.

Celtic fans will remember many famous wins over Rangers in the Scottish Cup over the decades but this one under Rodgers was particularly special.
