The Celtic television situation as Sky Sports reveal leaves more questions than answers

Celtic found out their 2023/24 Premiership fixtures on Friday morning.

It’s a tough opening for the Hoops, with visits to Aberdeen, Rangers, Hearts and Hibernian inside the first ten matches.

Celtic also face testing trips to Livingston and Motherwell during the early weeks of the campaign.

You’d expect most of those fixtures to be shown live on television but the reveal of Sky Sports selections seems to have left more questions than answers.

The broadcasters have confirmed that they will televise our Flag Day meeting with Ross County on Saturday 5 August.

They’ll also show our first derby of the season at Ibrox on Sunday 3 September, and the New Year’s clash at Celtic Park on Saturday 30 December.

The latter already has a date, time and is confirmed for television coverage despite being six months away.

More immediately, it is not clear whether Sky will be showing any Premiership games from matchday two or three.

Our trip to Aberdeen has not been selected at present. It may be hard to imagine a game between 1st and 3rd from last season not being shown but similar games have been overlooked in the past.

Sky showed 20 of our 28 league matches last season, with 16 of them coming away from home.

It would be great to learn that they are just holding back an announcement on the Pittodrie fixture till a later date.

But the fact they’ve already chosen a game from matchday four may cast doubt over that.
