The early Postecoglou Celtic decision that pleased Scott Brown

Scott Brown admits he was pleased with Ange Postecoglou’s decision to give the Celtic captaincy to Callum McGregor last summer.

The issue was just one of the many Postecoglou had to sort out when arriving in Glasgow in June 2021.

With Brown moving on to Aberdeen, a new leader had to be found. While many thought McGregor was a shoe-in, Postecoglou took his time before making a decision.

And McGregor’s predecessor was a big fan of his eventual choice.

Speaking to the BBC in a recent interview, the now Fleetwood Town boss said: ‘Cal’s drive and enthusiasm. I tried to drive everything as much as I possibly could, and I knew I was coming to the end.

‘I was just glad that Celtic offered Cal the captaincy because he drives training.

‘He drives standards about the place and he wants to be the best he possibly can be.

‘We still speak now. I never give him advice on how to captain Celtic.’

Brown also spoke about the importance of having a player who keeps the standards high at the club.

McGregor has certainly been partly responsible for Celtic’s standards being so high in virtually every match under Postecoglou.

McGregor leads differently from Brown. But there are also many similarities in the way the players inspire their team-mates.

Here’s hoping our current skipper can add some more medals to his collection this season.
