The forgotten Celtic story behind St Mirren-bound Eseosa Sule

Eseosa Sule is set to join St Mirren, but his Celtic career ended almost as quickly as his professional journey at Lennoxtown began.

Sule is expected to leave West Brom and sign a three-year deal at the Buddies, with a fee and terms already thrashed out.

Yet to finalise the move, Sule’s short loan spell at Motherwell was cruelly cut short with injury, but he is now looking bound for the Scottish Premiership with St Mirren.

His expected St Mirren move also reopens a Celtic Academy chapter that ended before most supporters had even learned his name.

What’s the point of Celtic’s Academy?

Should Celtic just give it up as the club seem incapable of making the Academy work.

Eseosa Sule spent ten years inside the Celtic Academy

Sule left Celtic for West Brom in 2023, but what many fans may not know is that he spent 10 years inside the Hoops’ youth system.

Handed his first professional contract at Celtic in 2022, Sule was just 16 years old as the Parkhead club looked to secure his future.

The deal was offered after the young Celtic striker shone at the 2022 Generation Adidas Cup where Sule impressed as the young Hoops dismantled Charlotte FC and drew Philadelphia Union.

However, by January 2023, Sule left Celtic to join West Brom’s scholarship programme where he has spent the last three years having made just one senior appearance at the Hawthorns.

What happened after Eseosa Sule left Celtic

Sule scored nine league goals for West Brom’s under-18s, added goals for the under-21s and later finished the 2024/25 youth campaign with 14 strikes and four assists before earning a senior League Cup appearance against Fleetwood.

St Mirren are now offering the 20-year-old another route into senior football in Scotland which could see a boy who developed at Lennoxtown for a decade now playing against Celtic next season in the SPFL.

Celtic spent ten years developing Sule and handed him a professional contract at 16. Within seven months, he had left Glasgow without making a senior appearance. He could now return to Celtic Park wearing the colours of a Premiership opponent.
