The ingenious way Roy Keane would avoid Celtic fan autograph seekers

Roy Keane was a smart player on the pitch for Manchester United and Celtic.

But the Irishman was seemingly even more intelligent off the field, as has been revealed by a former teammate of his this week.

The retired midfield enforcer is known for his dry sense of humour and his gruff demeanor from his punditry work, but it seems he’s not putting on any sort of character in his Sky Sports duties.

As according to ex-Celtic winger Ross Wallace, the 53-year-old would always prefer to avoid fans congregating outside the stadium during his time in Glasgow looking for autographs.

How Roy Keane would avoid Celtic fans as a player

Keane actually developed an ingenious plan to miss having to interact with punters and it only cost him a few bob.

“At Celtic Park on a Friday you used to have loads of fans waiting outside on autographs and that. The older lads would come in in their Range Rovers, nice cars,” Wallace said on Under the Cosh pod.

“I’m pretty sure Roy bought a little banged out Polo and he’d come in around the back door.

“Coming up in that, the fans wouldn’t turn an eye, they’re all waiting for the big cars. He’d come in the back door because the training ground used to be a mile down the road, you’d get in the car, drive down, back up and all the fans would wait at the stadium.

“He bought an old Polo and then offski, away he went.”

Keane chose Celtic over Euro heavyweights

Keane rejected Real Madrid for Celtic back after leaving Old Trafford, so you would be forgiven for assuming he would like to speak with like-minded fans of the club.

That wasn’t the case apparently, but he did have pals at the Glasgow giants, just not the ones that might have been expected when he turned up to sign under Gordon Strachan.

Wallace said Keano hung out with the youngsters as he enjoyed their banter more.

And he would often do extra gym sessions with them as opposed to spending too much time with the experienced pros.
